Yet another exciting birth film: http://www.orgasmicbirth.com

A doula is a professional labor support person.  Doula is a Greek word meaning "woman's servant."  A doula "mothers the mother" during labor and birth.  She doesn't perform medical tasks.  Her
role is to provide emotional, physical and educational support.

Research shows that a doula's continuous presence reduces the number of cesarean births, pain medication requests, epidurals, vacuum and forceps deliveries and pitocin use.  Shorter labors, more positive feelings about the birth, enhanced bonding, and better breastfeeding outcomes have been associated with doulas.

A doula helps mothers feel safe, comforted, nurtured and informed before, during and after the baby's birth.  This helps them relax and allow their bodies and babies to do what they can inherently do...

Doulas can offer massage and other comfort techniques and suggestions for the laboring woman, and can provide support, encouragement and information to her partner as well.  They can assist the partner in providing effective labor support, if desired.

Doulas can provide support for both unmedicated and medicated births (including epidurals) as well as cesarean deliveries.

Simply put - A doula helps a woman have the birth experience she desires - whatever this means for her.  Each experience is unique.
